Firebrand Atheist, Speaker, and Writer
Before joining the SSA, JT was most known as a debater on atheism and LGBT rights and as the co-founder of the Skepticon annual conference. From 2008-2010, JT worked as the organizing team leader for Skepticon 1, 2, and 3. The event would usher in a new format of conventions featuring rock star lineups while allowing people to attend for free.
After handing off the Skepticon torch, JT joined the Secular Student Alliance in January 2011 as their first high school specialist. Previously, the SSA had allowed high schools to affiliate, but JT was hired to build a high school program that catered to the specific needs of teenage activists. In his time at the SSA the number of high school groups grew over 400%. Though he left in August of 2012, he is still a part of their speakers bureau.
JT is known for an unconventional approach to activism such as building a cardboard box fort in the middle of campus to counter-protest evangelists or massing people together on his school's free speech zone with expletive-bearing signs in response to the school saying bands could not use coarse language.
Most importantly, JT is also humanity's best chance in a zombie apocalypse.
Here are some things that others say about JT's involvement in the secular movement:
"As a writer, JT Eberhard is smart, funny, honest, and totally fearless. As an organizer, he is passionate, dedicated, inspired, and as determined as a bulldog. And as a speaker, he tears the roof off the sucker. We are insanely lucky to have him on our side." ~Greta Christina
“JT Eberhard is, without doubt, a rising star in the secular community. Informed, passionate, and entertaining, his ability to educate and motivate are essential to building a better secular future. A much needed voice has been added to the chorus of secular champions and it’s a voice that I look forward to hearing for many years.” ~Matt Dillahunty
“The Future is JT Eberhard, and the Future is now. The new generation of atheist activists gives me hope and makes me excited for the positive direction the world is going. JT is a perfect example: a fearless leader, tireless event organizer, and a passionate and inspiring speaker.” ~David Fitzgerald, author of NAILED: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed At All
